AWARD GUIDELINES

For the purpose of selecting candidates/nominees, the Selections committee will consider athletic performances from September 1 of the previous year up to and including September 1 of the year in which the Awards event is held.

Tim Turow Award for Outstanding Athlete of the Year

 

Recipient must be participating in an athletic capacity as opposed to coaching, or managing and is restricted to athletes of amateur status only. The nominee must have had the City of Cambridge as their principal residence or represent the City of Cambridge in his or her athletic endeavours. Athletes who reside outside of Cambridge for the purpose of training or competing are also eligible.

There will be no restriction on age nor discrimination between the genders. “Sport” will include all sports activities recognized by a Provincial Sport Organization. There will be no restriction on caliber or level of competition. The degree of involvement in more than one sport is to be considered. Sportsmanship, behaviour, and deportment are to be considered. This award is awarded at a maximum of once per year, but not necessarily every year. In the event of a tie, Selections has the option to choose more than one individual.

Professional Athlete of the Year

 

Recipient must be participating in a professional athletic capacity as opposed to coaching, or managing.

The nominee must have had the City of Cambridge as their principal residence or represent the City of Cambridge in his/her athletic endeavours.

Athletes who reside outside of Cambridge for the purpose of training or competing are also eligible.

There will be no restriction on age nor discrimination between the genders.

The degree of involvement in more than one sport is to be considered. Sportsmanship, behaviour and deportment are to be considered.

This award is to be awarded at a maximum of once per year, not necessarily every year. In the event of a tie, the Selections Committee has the option to choose more than one individual.

George Hill Team of the Year

 

The recipients must be participating in an athletic capacity in a local league, or representing the City of Cambridge in the league in which the team participates. There will be no restriction on age nor discrimination between the genders.

The term “sport” will include all sport activities recognized by a Provincial Sport Organization (PSO).

Sportsmanship, behaviour and deportment are to be considered.

This award is restricted to teams of amateur status only.

The award is to be awarded a maximum of once per year, not necessarily every year. In the event of a tie, the Selections committee has the option to choose more than one team.

A team is defined as two (2) or more players.

High School Team of the Year

 

Nominees must be part of an officially sanctioned Waterloo County Secondary School Athletic Association and District 8 Sport.

Minimum requirement is WCSSAA/District 8/CWOSSA Champion.

Junior and senior teams may be eligible.

There will be no discrimination between the genders.

Sportsmanship, behaviour and deportment are to be considered.

A team is defined as two (2) or more players.

The award is to be awarded once per year, for success in the previous school year. Each school must provide the Selection Committee with background information on the team that they have nominated.

Sports Organization of the Year

 

The organization must represent the City of Cambridge.

There is no restriction on age of the athletes, executive, coaches, officials or volunteers of the organization.

The award recognizes the achievements of a sport organization whose athletes are competing on individual and/or team basis.

This award recognizes the contributions made by the organization, its volunteers, executive, coaches and officials.

The sports organization will include any club that produces athletes as recognized by a Provincial Sport Organization (PSO).

Don & Benita Rope Sports Contributor of the Year

 

Recipient must be or have been actively involved as a coach, manager, executive member or some other form of non-participating athletic capacity.

There will be no restriction on age nor discrimination between the genders.

The term sport will include all sport activities recognized by Provincial Sport Organization 

There will be no restriction on caliber or level of competition.

The degree of involvement in more than one sport is to be considered.

Sportsmanship, behaviour and deportment are to be considered.

There is to be no restriction as to amateur or professional status.

The award is to be awarded once per year for accomplishment for a one (1) year period and/or over a period of years.

In the event of a tie, the Selections Committee has the option to choose more than one individual.

Heart of Sport Award (or the Special Recognition Award)

 

The Heart of Sport (or the Special Recognition Award) is a new award which was presented for the first time in 2017. This award honours exceptional dedication under special circumstances in sport. It recognizes the ability to overcome obstacles and to persevere through adversity in the spirit of sportsmanship. The award celebrates those who compete against the odds, who display true grit and in so doing, demonstrate the heart of sport.

The recipient must have had the City of Cambridge as their principal residence or represent the City of Cambridge in his/her athletic endeavours.

The recipient must be participating in an athletic capacity.

There will be no restriction on age, nor discrimination between the genders. There will be no restriction on caliber or level of competition.

This award will only be awarded in a year when a suitable candidate is nominated.
